Daily Fantasy Baseball Tips – Selecting Pitchers

| April 21, 2014 | 0 Comments

Earlier this week, we discussed strategies and tips for selecting offensive players in daily fantasy baseball formats including FanDuel and DraftKings.

However, the most important position to examine in these leagues is the starting pitcher.

Not only do pitchers provide the potential for the most points among any daily fantasy players, they often come with the highest price tag in your roster.

To help you in your daily pitching selections, we’ve provided a list of tips and guidelines to follow as you make your roster decisions.

Examine the Odds

Similar to our advice on selecting hitters, we recommend starting your daily fantasy baseball research by looking at the Vegas odds for each game.

With wins, innings pitched and strikeouts providing a significant boost to your daily point total, finding favorable hitting matchups is key in daily fantasy baseball success.

When examining the odds, you should be looking for two main things: odds of winning and over/under run totals.

Teams with odds of -200 or higher are generally the best bets for securing a win while providing a good opportunity for high innings pitched totals and strikeouts.

Additionally, you should look for matchups with an over/under run total of eight or below.

Keep in mind that you should thoroughly research the reason for the low over/under projects to ensure that the pitcher you select is poised for a solid game.

Examine the Recent Performance of Pitchers

Much like hitters, pitchers are susceptible to hot and cold streaks as well.

When selecting a pitcher, it is important to not only examine his overall statistics but how well he has performed in his previous few starts.

Your chances of fantasy success are greatly increased when selecting pitchers who have averaged high strikeout counts (five or more), low earned runs (three or less), and high innings pitched (seven or more) in their previous three starts.

Although other factors including opponents and locality must be kept in mind, the recent success (or lack thereof) of pitchers is a strong indicator of how they will pitch on any given day.

Take Advantage of Pitching-Friendly Ballparks

Baseball is game where inches can make the difference between a homerun and a fly out, or a double and a single.

Whereas a deep fly ball to left field in Marlins Park could be a routine out for the defense, the same hit in Fenway Park could easily become a three-run home run.

As such, it is important to research locality when choosing your starting pitcher. The following ballparks are the most pitcher-friendly in Major League Baseball:

1)     AT&T Park | San Francisco Giants

2)     Marlins Park | Miami Marlins

3)     PETCO Park | San Diego Padres

4)     Safeco Field | Seattle Mariners

5)     Dodger Stadium | Los Angeles Dodgers

6)     Angel Stadium | Los Angeles Angels

7)     Citi Field | New York Mets

8)     O.co Coliseum | Oakland A’s

9)     Tropicana Field | Tampa Bay Rays

10)   Busch Stadium | St. Louis Cardinals

A pitcher-friendly ballpark is by no means a guarantee of daily fantasy baseball success but limiting home runs and extra-base hits through locality is a great start to consistently winning your daily contests.
